Meet Rosie Kirkland, a quiet homemaker with a magical talent for murder.

Rosie is just going through the motions, leading an average quiet life. However, that normal life is thrown into a tailspin when Rosie's husband succumbs to a terminal illness. A mysterious friend named Vera Caldwell shows up on the doorstep, offering food, comfort, and an introduction to a world Rosie once thought impossible.

Suddenly, nothing is what it seems to be. The marriage she thought to be a happy union is revealed to be one full of dark secrets. The little old ladies down the street are unmasked as a clandestine cabal with origins as old as civilization itself. The simple act of cooking becomes an act of vengeance. And Rosie's own identity begins to unravel as she finds herself at the center of the ongoing history of witchcraft in Middle America.

dis Comfort Food (Audible Audio Edition) Brad Carter Betsy Beard Post Mortem Press Books

This is my second foray into the world of Mr. Carter, and I have to say it's been no less satisfying than the first. While this offering is a bit more gruesome in parts than "The Big Man of Barlow," it also contains a generous helping of mystery and magic (if an entirely different brand,) and a story that is equally engaging. The central figure to this one is Rosie Kirkland, a middle-aged woman whose life is drastically changed following the deaths of her mother and husband. It's after her mother's passing that she is introduced to Vera Caldwell, who is only one of the many folks who arrives at her doorstep bearing a sympathy casserole, but hers turns out to be quite different from the rest. Its effect on Rosie and her husband is startling, and certainly not unpleasant! After her husband succumbs to cancer (if indeed that's the thing that actually killed him) Rosie once again contacts Vera, and the two become good friends. As she learns more about Vera's history, and the shocking truth about those casseroles of hers, Rosie's life quickly descends down a rabbit-hole of magic, murder, and ultimately self-discovery.

I'm quite impressed with Carter's writing. His imagination, as well as skillful development of each character, kept me picking my Kindle back up to devour more of this story at ever possible chance. I look forward to moving on to his next novel in the near future!

dis Comfort Food (Audible Audio Edition) Brad Carter Betsy Beard Post Mortem Press Books Reviews

After reading a review of this book on NPR, I picked it for my turn hosting book club. I'm not sure if the other reviewers and my club read the same book because we all overwhelmingly thought it was horrible. The initial chapter, probably the spark of the idea of the book, had potential but the story soured quickly. It was weird, bizarre, hurried, and predictable. I would not recommend this book to anyone, for any reason.
Weird, disquietening, unpredictable and great fun. The book always managed to pivot just when I thought I knew what was going to happen.

Carter shows a true knack for southern church lady dialogue it this well-written and throughly enjoyable book.
Homespun tale that starts out nice and normal and slowly spirals into a satisfying and gory horror story. My favorite kind of horror is the kind that starts out in your typical suburban setting with the sort of characters you might meet in your daily life. This story delivers--the main character is well done and very believable as she makes her transition from bereaved housewife to...something else. I did see the ending coming about halfway through the book, but that did nothing to take away from my enjoyment.
Having grown up in the Bible Belt, I know what happens when someone dies the church ladies with casseroles arrive en masse. I (dis)Comfort Food, not all the ladies are good church-going folk. The heroine Rosie encounters an old woman apprenticed to even more ancient witches after the death of her mother. Instead of eye of newt and wing of bat, the modern day potion components are Velveeta cheese and crispy onions. Aphrodisacs, euthanasia, even Russian Roulette are served up in convenient Pyrex covered dishes. I always cheer for the witches in spite of the morally murky waters Rosie slips into, especially when one bad guy want to unleash some Old Time Religion via the Malleus Maleficorum on her and her mates. Give this book to one of your maiden aunts who likes a grisly murder novel and see if anything new shows up the next family pot luck.
I have been meaning to purchase this book for some time now, having read The Big Man of Barlow and enjoying it very much. What finally had me pulling out my pocketbook was the above poor review from the book club leader. I was put out and had to see for myself what Mr. Carter had been up to.

I thoroughly enjoyed (dis)Comfort Food. As someone else mentioned, I actually stopped reading and made, of all things, a damned casserole.

The book starts off slow and easy and lets the reader get to know the characters, which I think is imperative to any good story. These people are familiar and comfortable. At first. Then they are familiar, but not necessarily likeable. Then they are very unfamiliar and downright wicked.

Great story. My only complaint is that I purchased the edition, and now I have to buy the real deal! (Good books get to come live here. Bad books do not.)
