The Live Corpse edition by Leo Tolstoy Aylmer Maude Louise Shanks Maude Reference eBooks
A philandering, drunk husband (Fedya) promises his wife divorce if he screws up again, which he does. He then intends to follow through with the divorce. However, his wife Lisa wishes to forgive and forget the past but Fedya wants to maintain his word - so that he doesn't `ruin her life'.Fedya intends to off himself so that he doesn't have to lie to obtain a divorce from Lisa (she wouldn't substantiate his infidelity, the denial of the wife of such behavior wouldn't create grounds to dissolve the marriage - remember, we're dealing with Orthodox Russia).
After his ruse is found out a trial ensues. Here Fedya finds his nerve, for the benefit of himself and his wife.
A man who's honor was aimed in all the wrong directions.

The Live Corpse edition by Leo Tolstoy Aylmer Maude Louise Shanks Maude Reference eBooks Reviews
Not only is it an interesting story, but it explains Russian divorce customs of the time. Strangely, one of the women in the book is named Anna Dmitrievna Karenina. The Live Corpse was supposedly written around 1900, after Anna Karenina had been written.
