Upper North America, 1628 Françoise Grenier’s life had been a combination of bad circumstances, worse luck and even poorer choices. Orphaned near Paris at the age of twelve, she became a street urchin. At fifteen she fell in with an older man who convinced her to follow him to the new world of Québec where he would marry her. Instead he abused her. Only when he failed to return from trading with the natives and she heard they had killed him, did she find herself liberated. Taken in by the few women of Québec, she was just recovering when English privateers captured the failing colony, sending its few inhabitants, including Françoise, back to France. One of the ladies gave her a letter to deliver in France which led her to a new life, allowing her to return to help rebuild the colony five years later. It was here she prospered, beginning one of the early prominent families of Canada, helping to forge a great nation from the frozen wilderness. If you enjoyed Fearful Passage North, The Allard Series, and the author’s ability to bring history to life, you will love this one.

Noel Langlois and Francoise Grenier are my 9x great grandparents and I have done a lot of research into the family. All the characters in the book (except the 2 fictional coureurs du bois / voyageurs) are as they show in my family tree. Dates, parishes, locations, time frames, etc. Everything is perfect. Tying all this together as a piece of historical fiction immerses the reader into the real world of New France. Often these works are clunky at best - this author has written a piece that would be a great read even if these weren't my ancestors.

1634 Return to the New World Wilmont R Kreis 9781530882748 Books Reviews

Dr. Kreis has done it once again. With over 12 books under his belt this fast moving novel cleverly combines historical fact with historical fiction. Titled “Return to the New World”, the book transports you mentally back to the 1600s involving England, France, the Dutch, Canadian Quebec and the native Indians. He slipped in references to his “kin” with the names, Fortons, Allards and Lejunes and coyly introduces a tad of realistic intimacy. This novel is a stimulating page-turner. The surprise ending is an excellent lead into his next book, “The Beaver Wars”.
As an avid follower of the Allard sagas, I was once again, happily swept back to 17th century Quebec by Wilmont Kreis' "Return to the New World". The writing is significantly faithful to history, yet easily engages the imagination as we're invited along with the habitants (early french settlers of Quebec) to experience the early French Canadian wilderness. We are given the opportunity to share in their many struggles, failures and successes. The characters are vividly brought to life by the author, who sincerely communicates genuine pride for his ancestors, the beloved people from whom his stories come. If you like historical fiction, this book is a great read that does not disappoint!
1634 Return to the New World is a great reading Historical Novel. The main Character Francoise Greniers is Brought to life and the reader becomes one with her and all of the other characters within. You find yourself being there in Quebec and living the life with them. You find their lives are very primitive and hardships are taken in stride. Lives are influenced by everything in the environment and coped with in how they solved problems to survive. While reading you learn just how that was accomplished.
Once you start reading you become one of the characters because you tend to associate yourself with the life-like characters in the story. The flow of your emotions are influenced by their progress and their failures. There were many of these throughout the book. Just when you think everything is going along just fine and all is well there is another grave happening and you wonder where this will be taking you.
There are many learnings you can learn from reading this book and you can apply to your everyday thinking. Their problem solving techniques were absolutely primitive and yet genius of sorts. I can safely say I enjoyed this Book and You will too.
Lucky descendants to have thirst books by Kreis. I hope there are more.
Once again, a well-written novel of historical fiction. He really knows how to make the real characters interesting, despite the lack of actual details in historical documents. There were a few minor dated discrepancies in some of the side details (like the when and where the history of Pete Noel come into play), but they are relatively insignificant to the general tale, which is wonderful.
Am still reading it, but I love how it brings my ancestors and Quebec colonial people to life. Great read!!!
Using many records of the early years, the author has woven a story of what those times may have looked like. I was delighted to read about these people who are my ancestors. By using the records and actual names, I was drawn in to their world. While this is a fictional rendition of the settling of Quebec, I can now envision what their lives might have been. Can't wait to read more.
